What is iroiro reader?
A graded reading app for learning Japanese. You read real Japanese: public-domain literature, children's stories, and open-licensed news, with every word and sentence tappable for a contextual definition, grammar notes, and a full translation.
Do I need to be advanced to use it?
No. Content is graded by difficulty, from near-beginner upward, and a small, clearly labeled track of easy original stories fills the beginner levels. You can start reading real Japanese well before you could tackle a novel.
Is the Japanese real or simplified?
It is mostly real, authentic text, ingested as written, with our annotation layer added on top. A small, clearly labeled set of easy originals helps beginners get started. We do not water the classics down.
Do I need to know kanji?
No. Every word is tappable for its reading and meaning, and furigana is available, so you can read above your current kanji level and pick up new characters in context.
How is it different from a textbook or a flashcard app?
You learn from whole, real texts instead of isolated example sentences or word lists. Tap anything you do not know, understand it in context, and keep reading. The grammar notes explain the genuinely tricky spots the way a patient tutor would.
What can I read?
Public-domain Japanese literature and children's stories, plus open-licensed news, with more added over time. Everything carries definitions, grammar notes, and a full translation.
